Stunning media room and entertainment space

Meeting technical and interior design challenges…

This project was more than just a high-end media room. The space also had to work as a general entertainment space, including a pool table. The room layout required some clever thinking and stunning interior design to achieve the client’s vision.

It was key that none of the equipment for the cinema should be visible when not in use, which threw up a number of challenges to be solved.

“A complex project where the joinery/interior design was arguably more demanding than the technology component. Many problems were ultimately
resolved with the finished room delivered to a very high standard.”

Hiding Technology

If the Sony projector had been sited at the typical location at the back of the room, the projected image would be obscured by people sat in the luxurious custom-built curved seating.

It was therefore necessary to move the projector towards the middle of the room, above the pool table. A Future Automation motorised projector lift hides the projector when not in use.

The surround and rear speakers for the Dolby 7.1 audio similarly could not be installed in the side and rear walls as in a typical home cinema layout. Additional windows and the extended length of the multi-use non-symmetrical space prevented this. We designed a unique ceiling coffer that incorporates these speakers with their output angled towards the seating positions.

It was necessary for the main equipment rack to be located in the room, but again clever design ensures it remains out of sight behind a ‘secret door’.

Controlling light

To ensure the cinema could be used any time of day or night, detailed consideration had to be given to lighting. Not just the light fittings for evening use, but careful control of natural daylight streaming in through the windows.

There are two curtains on the right side of the room, one for each of the two doors that lead to the corridor. On the left side, there are three windows, each fitted with a fully-recessed blackout blind—channels within the window recess ensure no light leakage when the cinema is in use, even in bright daylight conditions. Above each window there is also a separate Roman blind that comes down in front of the blackout blind which serves primarily aesthetic purposes to complement the curtains opposite.

In addition to the traditional wallplate lighting control and startup/shutdown sequences programmed in to the Savant Pro control system; a simple tug of the drapes triggers all the room’s blinds and curtains to open or close in harmony.

Interior Design and Fabrication

The Cyberhomes interior design team worked hand-in-hand with our technical designers. Attention to detail is evident everywhere in the room, from the bespoke wood panelling to the fabrics specified for the custom-built fittings and furniture.

Every element is carefully designed and CNC machined to fit perfectly.

A layer of Acoustiblok was used within the walls and ceiling—greatly reducing sound transmission to adjacent rooms.

Our in-house lighting designer specified light fittings to perfectly complement the overall feel of the room. Selectable lighting scenes ensure just the right ambience for watching a movie or sport, playing pool or simply relaxing.
