Designing the Connected Home CPD

CPD Designing the Connected Home

Learning objectives

  • In all cases getting the right wiring infrastructure in place is key. The most expensive mistake you can make is not putting infrastructure in at the beginning of a project.
  • The network is the backbone of any technology installation. Most of a home’s devices are connected and communicate via the network. Having a secure and faithful network is the most important part of any project when installing technology.
  • Ten years ago, most households only had a couple of wireless devices, however that is certainly not the case nowadays.
  • Using Cyberhomes to help with the design, system choice, integration, and automation of a home’s system allows the spaces you design to be enjoyed without having to compromise on aesthetics.
Why use a Technology Integrator for Smart Home Infrastructure?

An integrator like Cyberhomes needs to be brought into the project at the earliest possible stage. This is to avoid expensive changes in the project once designs have already been produced. If technology is considered early on, Cyberhomes can advise on the correct wiring and specify the right products needed for now and future expansion.

Cyberhomes can help with:

  • PREPARING THE BRIEF—Understand the client’s needs, lifestyle, and requirements. Understand how to apply technology to enhance life at home and prepare a brief.
  • PROJECT SCOPE—Ensure that the correct equipment is specified based on the project size and budget.
  • PROJECT DEVELOPMENT—Coordination with other trades and designers such as M&E consultants, Interior Designers and Quantity Surveyors.
  • DESIGN—Produce detailed documentation based on client briefs and attend site visits.
  • PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE—Extensive knowledge about system integrity, technology, current and upcoming.

Designing Home Cinemas and Media Rooms CPD

CPD Introduction to Integrated Lighting Design

Learning objectives

  • A cinema room is defined as being single-purpose—we go here to watch something. A cinema usually consists of a dark room, rows of seats (not always required), no windows, and no blackout blinds.
  • A media room is a multi-use room—with the main purpose being to watch good quality TV, films, or for computer gaming. It could be the main sitting room, or a playroom, ‘den’, or in a kitchen-lounge-diner.
  • Different building materials have different STC code—Sound Transmission Coefficients—showing how much sound energy gets through. The room should be kept airtight to prevent sound leakage, and so care must be taken with the heating/cooling and ventilation systems—large ducts and soft bends are advisable, and two 90-degree corners between the vents and the heat exchanger unit.
  • Dimmable, controllable lights are a must.
  • Things to consider when looking at space planning are: Ventilation; Cooling; Expandability; Maintenance and Serviceability.
  • A cinema or media room system is complicated—the display system, sound system and the various video sources are all usually made by different brands. Juggling too many remotes or device apps is not a great client experience!
