Short-Throw Cinema—Beaconsfield

Challenging room demands new short-throw technology

When we were approached about adding a home cinema during a home renovation, we knew the limited space would create some challenges.

The client wanted a fully-fledged projection home cinema system. Typically this would involve a ceiling-mounted projector at the rear of the room. With no space above the ceiling to accommodate a motorised projector lift, until recently, this would have meant the projector was permanently on view in the room—which wasn’t ideal. However, several manufacturers have now launched short-throw home cinema projectors. Short-throw projector technology has been popular in commercial applications for a number of years (for example school interactive white boards).

Now short-throw projectors are available that meet the requirements of home cinemas (wide colour gamut, low fan noise, HDCP-capable HDMI inputs etc). Cyberhomes installed a Screen Innovations 100” fixed screen with complete with colour-change backlight that allows the screen to act as a room feature even when the projector is not in use. The 16:9 ratio screen ensures it is ideal for both TV/movies and gaming.

"We would highly recommend Cyberhomes. They worked with us to transform a large lounge area into a state-of-the art home media room that could serve as a comfortable day-to day-lounge whilst also providing a top-quality big screen movie experience when desired.

"The team was great to work with and came to us with innovative ideas to optimise our space. They collaborated seamlessly with other trades as part of our full home renovation to complete the project on time and with excellent attention to detail. In the end we were able to exceed our own expectations regarding what we could accomplish in our home thanks to the Cyberhomes team."

The Services Provided...

Audio & Video

Artcoustic perfection. The Integra AV receiver is a Dolby® Atmos® 5.2.2 surround sound configuration.

To achieve the best possible audio quality, we specified the Artcoustic range of on-wall speakers. A soundbar below the screen provides centre channel duties with Diablo SL 6-3 speakers providing the main left/right and Diablo SL surround left/right channels. Two Architect SL speakers in the ceiling provide the Atmos height channels and there’s two Impact One subwoofers in the bespoke cabinet behind acoustically-transparent fabric. An Artcoustic technician calibrated the final audio.

The grills for the Artcoustic speakers were custom finished to match the same paint colour as the walls—so the speakers look great with or without the grills in place.

Home Cinema

Custom-built. We worked closely with AV furniture specialists Hayden to design and build a custom cabinet to our specification.

It houses the projector, X-box games console and two subwoofers. Critically, a carefully-designed slot in the top of the cabinet allows the image from the Sony projector housed within the cabinet to project onto the screen above. The selected VPL-VZ1000 projector is capable of stunning 4K resolution and with a 2500 lumens output offers astounding picture quality. The projector was calibrated to Imaging Science Foundation (ISF) specifications for optimum picture colour accuracy. The Hayden cabinet is finished with a robust Corian surface to ensure it stays in prime condition for many years.

An equipment rack outside the room accommodates the Integra AV receiver, Apple TV for streaming of TV and movies (essential as the property’s location meant no satellite TV coverage) and Ultra HD Blu-Ray player. The Cyberhomes team also installed and programmed a Control4 automation system to operate the whole set-up via a single SR-260 remote control, including the existing Loxone lighting.
